School officials tell USDA they need lunch flexibility
More than two dozen school administrators, food service directors and nutritionists from Edwardsville to Champaign met with U. S. Department of Agriculture representatives Friday in Pana at a workshop sponsored by Rep. Rodney Davis.
Davis, R-Taylorville, said he called the meeting because schools in district are seeing a decrease in their school lunch program participation since new federal nutrition guidelines were introduced earlier this year. “We all have the same goals, to make sure our children eat better,” Davis said. “But some schools are finding the new healthy eating standards difficult to meet. There’s also a problem of wasted food because children aren’t eating some things. “I’ve spoken to (Agriculture) Secretary (Tom) Vilsack about the need to make it easier for our schools to provide healthy foods that children will eat.” Davis said some schools are withdrawing from the federally funded school lunch program rather than adhere to new standards.
