U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis (R-Ill.) today released the following statement regarding the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) announcement of proposed rules for the commercial use of small unmanned aircraft systems (UAS).
“Our rules and regulations must keep up with technological advances in aviation or the U.S. risks falling behind our competitors,” said Davis. “With the proper regulation, I believe the use of small UAS could transform operations within our agriculture and energy industries. It’s my hope the FAA will consider input from stakeholders and expedite the rulemaking process.”
Davis has previously encouraged the FAA to develop rules and regulations to allow for the commercial use of UAS. Video of Davis questioning the FAA during a recent Transportation and Infrastructure Committee hearing can be found here.
Currently, the commercial use of UAS in the U.S. is mostly banned with few exemptions granted by the FAA. The proposed FAA regulations on UAS include limitations on aircraft size, airspeed, altitude and other operating restrictions. An overview of the FAA’s proposed rules can be found here.
