Davis meets with students to hear their thoughts on school safety
U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis (R-Ill.) yesterday visited Edinburg Junior High School to discuss school safety with students. Students recently wrote letters to Davis on the subject.
“Students want to be heard and they want to feel safe in their classrooms,” said Davis. “I’m proud of these students for engaging in their government and being part of the discussion. Congress took significant steps last month to improve safety in our schools and reduce gun violence, but there’s not just one piece of legislation we can pass to stop these violent acts. From Congress to law enforcement to schools, we all have to be part of the conversation and part of the solution. Just passing another law is not enough. We’ve seen too many of these shootings happen because there was a breakdown in our system and a failure to act in many cases. We need to take a step back from the politics of it and figure out what changes are needed to be effective in stopping and reducing these acts of violence.”
Last month, Congress passed commonsense policy changes to increase school safety, strengthen background checks, improve access to mental health services, and give the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) authority to study the cause of gun violence. These changes have been signed into law. More information can be found here.
