U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis (R-Ill.) released the following statement after the VA MISSION Act was signed into law by President Trump. This landmark legislation makes reforms to the Department of Veterans Affairs and fully funds the VA Choice Program, which was set to run out of funding on May 31st.
"For far too long, our nation's veterans were not getting the care they deserve and years of mismanagement left the VA in disrepair. We are fundamentally changing that and putting the VA back on track to fulfilling its promise," Davis said. "This law will greatly improve the lives of veterans, their families and caregivers who depend on the VA health care system to get timely access to care. I am happy to see our veterans prioritized by making this the law of the land."
What the VA MISSION Act Does
Strengthens and improves the VA healthcare system for approximately 9 million veterans by:
-Consolidating multiple existing community care programs into one cohesive program. Community care programs are authorized when the VA cannot fulfill the services the veteran needs and among other circumstances.
-Establishes process to review VA's assets and to recommend actions to modernize and realign medical infrastructure to ensure veterans have access to quality care.
-Expands the Department of Veterans Affairs' Post-9/11 Caregiver program so that caregivers from all eras can take advantage of the benefits it provides to those who care for those who served.
-Funds the VA Choice Program until the new program is implemented so that veteran care is not disrupted.
