Davis: Support ICE & Reform Our Broken Immigration System
U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis (R-Ill.) today voted for H.Res.990, a resolution supporting the mission of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers and personnel and called on Democrats to work with Republicans to address our broken immigration system.
“The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency was created as a direct result of our nation being attacked on 9/11. ICE officers put their lives on the line every day to stop illegal drug and gun smuggling, human trafficking, and other dangerous criminal activity. They deserve our support. To suggest that we should abolish ICE is not only insulting to these men and women, but incredibly dangerous rhetoric. If you disagree with immigration policy, then vote to change it. Unfortunately, not a single one of my colleagues pushing to abolish ICE voted to stop family separations, protect DACA recipients, or secure the border when the bill came to the floor last month. It’s time to stop playing politics and come together to fix these issues.” Some of the criminal activity stopped by ICE last year include: -ICE seized 980,000 pounds of narcotics, including drugs fueling the opioid crisis – 2,370 pounds of fentanyl and 6,967 pounds of heroin. -Made 127,000 arrests for criminal offenses including dangerous drugs, assault, weapons, sexual assault, kidnapping, and homicide. -ICE Homeland Security Investigations made 4,818 gang-related arrests. Last month, Davis voted for H.R. 6136, the Border Security and Immigration Reform Act and H.R. 4760, the Securing America’s Future Act, which would have provided border security, addressed DACA recipients, moved us toward a merit-based immigration system, and prevented the separation of families at the border. Both bills failed to pass the House. |
