Davis Statement on Confirmation of VA Secretary Robert Wilkie
U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis (R-Ill.) released the following statement on the confirmation of Robert Wilkie as Secretary of the Veterans Administration by the Senate last night. The vote was 86-9
“I was pleased to see the bipartisan confirmation of VA Secretary Robert Wilkie, including support from Senators Duckworth and Durbin,” said Davis. “While Secretary Wilkie was at the Department of Defense, he worked with me to change DOD travel policy to ensure all families of our fallen get to meet their loved ones arriving home at Dover Air Force Base. I am hopeful he will bring this same level of commitment and responsiveness to the VA and work with us to make significant structural reforms that will reduce the VA claims backlog and improve care for our veterans.”
Davis has fought to change policy to require DoD to cover the travel of family of fallen, non-combat servicemembers to Dover Air Force Base to meet the arrival of their loved one. Davis first became aware of this issue when helping the family of Petty Officer Logan Palmer of Harristown, Illinois, who died aboard the USS John S. McCain last August.
The Pentagon announced in May that they have changed their policy to automatically arrange and cover the travel costs for families of servicemembers killed in non-combat operations to meet the casket at Dover Air Force Base.
