Davis Highlights Importance of Fire Grants in Small Communities
U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis visited three fire departments within the 13th District to highlight the importance of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program. AFG is a federal program within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) that provides grants to local fire departments across the country to ensure communities have access to emergency response equipment and training.
Davis voted to increase funding for this program in March of this year. Since Fiscal Year 2014, fire departments in the 13th District have been awarded more than $1.5 million through the AFG program. Davis visited fire departments in Taylorville, Nokomis, and Raymond-Harvel on Tuesday to see how recent grants have benefitted these communities. “These grants are critical to helping our smaller fire departments protect people in their communities,” said Davis. “One of the most fundamental roles of government is to provide police and fire protection and helping our local governments succeed is an important part of my job. Taxpayers in these communities pay into the system and it’s important they see the benefits. The men and women, many volunteer firefighters, who put their lives on the line deserve not just our recognition, but our help in obtaining the correct equipment and training needed to keep people safe.” More information about the AFG program can be found here.
