U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis (R-Ill.) today discussed impeachment and released this statement regarding latest updates from Democrats' impeachment inquiry:
“This is a complete failure of Democratic leadership and an embarrassment to the institution. Not only will we not address infrastructure, student loan debt, prescription drug costs or any other major legislative item during impeachment proceedings, but this makes Congress’ constitutional oversight role look like a complete joke.
"Instead of waiting to see the transcripts, instead of waiting to see the complaint, instead of waiting to hear from the Director of National Intelligence, instead of investigating this matter, Speaker Pelosi determined, based on a rumor, that this president had committed an impeachable offense. This comes after they peddled a false narrative that this president had also colluded with Russia to win an election even before the investigation was complete, which ended up determining there was no collusion. It’s clear Democrats have been intent on impeaching this president, regardless of the facts, since he was sworn into office.
"I believe in Congress’ constitutional responsibility to be a check on the Executive Branch, but after this spectacle why would anyone believe us? That to me is more concerning and detrimental to our country than anything I’ve read in this transcript.”
Davis also asked former Congressman and Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood for his advice on impeachment. LaHood chaired impeachment proceedings of President Clinton. The former secretary said, in part, to avoid impeachment like the plague because Congress will never be the same if members don't.
