Davis Supports New Safety Protections for Rideshare Users Through Sami’s LawSami’s Law named in memory of Samantha Josephson, who was tragically murdered by a rideshare driver impersonator in South Carolina in 2019
This past Wednesday, U.S. Representative Rodney Davis (R-Ill.) voted in favor of Sami’s Law, which would enact new safety protections for users of rideshare companies like Uber and Lyft.
“The tragic murder of Sami Josephson was a wake up call that more needed to be done to protect users of rideshare companies,” said Rep. Davis. “The use of rideshare companies like Uber and Lyft is quite prevalent in central and southwestern Illinois, particularly in our college and university towns. Sami’s law will make use of rideshare services in our communities safer and more secure. I was proud to honor the life of Sami by supporting these safety protections so we can prevent another tragedy. I look forward to the Senate passing this legislation and the president signing it into law.”
Sami’s Law is named in memory of Samantha “Sami” Josephson of Robbinsville Township, New Jersey. Sami was tragically murdered by a rideshare driver impersonator in Columbia, South Carolina in 2019. She was 21 years old at the time of her death.
Sami’s Law was passed through H.R. 4686. The legislation requires rideshare drivers to display a front and rear license plate, use a scannable quick response or similar code on the windows for riders to verify they are entering in the correct vehicle, use illuminated signage, and undergo periodic vehicle safety inspections. The legislation also prohibits the sale of ridesharing decals or signage to any person who isn’t a ridesharing driver.
The legislation passed the House unanimously by voice vote and now heads to the U.S. Senate for consideration.
