Davis Announces Federal Firefighter Grant to Savoy Fire Department
U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis (R-Ill) today announced the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in cooperation with the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) has awarded a Assistance to Firefighter (AFG) grant in the amount of $84,631.43 to the Savoy Fire Department. Savoy will contribute a 5% cost share totaling $4,232. The grant will be used to purchase an in-station Exhaust Removal System manufactured and installed by MagneGrip Group. āIām proud to support these grants in Congress because they are critical to helping our fire departments protect themselves and the citizens they serve," said Davis. "Having visited the Savoy Fire Department several times over the past couple of years I know the need is there. Savoy firefighters will be safer and healthier because of this grant." "Savoy Fire Department is grateful to be awarded the 2020 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG). The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies diesel exhaust as a Group 1 carcinogen and exposure is associated with an increased risk for cancer. This grant and the diesel exhaust removal system will directly improve the health and safety of our firefighters by reducing exposure," said Chief Jason Dillingham, Savoy Fire Department. "Nationally, firefighters face a 9% greater risk of cancer diagnosis and a 14% increase in cancer related deaths. The Savoy Fire Department is committed to the health and safety of our members. The reduction of exposure to carcinogens, both on the fireground and in the firehouse, significantly aids in that effort."
